The Day After – 29th August
What’s the last thing you’d want to do after drinking 8 different whiskies the night before…?
Why do we do this to ourselves? It turned out that an old school chum had invited me the same weekend for a visit to his new house. We don’t see each other that often, both enjoy a dram and there was the matter of staying overnight that sealed it. Of course, it was no accident that I was travelling with 6 bottles of whisky. He had 2 bottles that were the remains of a 12 bottle haul I’d bought him as a gift back in 2001. I was very curious to see what time had done to them as they were both at half fill and they say whisky doesn’t go off. We drank:
Hakushu Distillers Reserve
Yamazaki Distillers Reserve
Nikka From The Barrel
Auchentoshan 3 Wood
Dailuaine-Glenlivet 18 Chatteau Lafitte finish
My friends wife joined in and we poured our way through the selection. All the Japanese whiskies were particularly well received with special mention going to the Nikka. The remaining 2001 bottles (Benriach & Glenrothes) were drinkable but had faded with time and oxygen. The Signet was a perfect closer.
This was after an afternoon of being plied with margaritas. I slept well…
