Linkwood 12 (Flora & Fauna)
Bottle: Standard Diageo “Flora & Fauna” bottling (the phrase was coined by Michael Jackson due to the pictures on each label – in this case a pair of swans…). These are released to promote the less well known distilleries of their stable.
Nose: Butter, lemon pepper and mixed herbs. Gets dustier as it breathes.
Body: Heavier than expected, supple and quite oily.
Palate: Honey, almond, black pepper and pine sap. Good balance but a little understated for mine.
Finish: Good length. Black peppercorns, aniseed, a little ash and a hint of machine oil.
Neat/Ice/Water: 43%. Neat.
Verdict: Quaffable. The palate is light, dry and kinda delicate but then it really gets going in the finish which has longevity and an elegant fade. For me it’s great in parts and ever so slightly disappointing in others so it averages out as decent. Feels like it wasn’t far off being something much greater however if the opening moves were a little more robust. Having said that it’s very well priced at the £46 you can buy it for online. Got mine at auction a couple of months ago and no regrets at all. Elegant, well crafted stuff this, I just wanted the volume at 9 instead of 7…
