Ben Nevis 1998 18 year old Rum Finish (Cadenheads)
Bottle: Cadenhead’s authentic collection standard bottling.
Nose: Cotton candy, lime jello, and shortbread. Unusual combo but it works rather well.
Body: Light and oily.
Palate: Key lime pie, buttery, sugared pastry, some peppermint and a dash of aniseed.
Finish: Gently warming but not overly long with growing herbal notes and continued aniseed.
Neat/Ice/Water: 50.2% Keep it neat.
Verdict: Quaffable. This is a reasonably sweet dram that is easily drinkable. The flavours are quite fresh and well balanced. A good desert dram, it would pair nicely with a citrus tart or a sugar dusted fruit salad. The nose is great but it tails off a bit after that. It was finished in a Belize rum cask for 2 years. This was released in Autumn 2017 but no longer available I don’t think. When I went to pick it up, it was mentioned that it was in high demand at the time, 210 bottles only so they wouldn’t have lasted long. A quick search shows me it’s going at auction for about £100 or so which is about the limit of what I’d pay for it.
PS – as it’s xmas eve, tomorrow I’m going to pull out something a bit special from my cabinet. Stay tuned.
